Jac o' lyn Murphy: The Dianne Salad goes to Japan

The Dianne Salad goes to Japan

I knew I wanted an Asian Salad
on the menu for our Japanese party.
My favorite "Chinese Chicken Salad"
of all time comes from Green Street Restaurant in Pasadena.

The Diane Salad is infamous.
It is a fairly simple salad with lettuce, chicken, fried won ton skins,
rice noodles and slivered almonds but it is the dressing that makes it so special.
Although they sell bottles of the dressing at the restaurant,
the actual recipe is TOP SECRET.
I have an "inside source"
that was one of Green Street's best Hostesses
circa 1985 and I have a copy of the recipe!

We ate the "Diane's Japanese Salad" with bamboo forks
that I had stamped with either a J or a 10
in honor of the birthday boy.

  6. Hi! I would love the recipe! My mom gave what she said was the recipe years ago, and I would love to compare. What I have is very different than the usual Chinese Chicken Salad dressing. Please send to susieegami@sbcglobal.net.

  7. I would very much like the recipe. This salad is very similar to Trader Joe's Pasadena Salad and my husband loves the dressing that comes with it. They recently changed the size of the salad to be larger, but with the same amount of dressing, so half the salad goes uneaten by him now. I would love to be able to make it for him. Please send to lotusx@mac.com. Thank you.

  56. I've been a fan since the place opened ON Green St, next to the crepe restaurant. I think a waitress there told me (close to 30 years ago, now) that liquid lecithin was part of the magic, keeping everything suspended and clear (instead of yellowed). Even so, there's something that keeps eluding everyone's copycat attempts. I'd love to make the "real deal."
So glad I landed on your site! Thank you.
